The Challenge
The hotel ownership group wanted a reception desk that made an immediate visual statement to arriving guests—something that conveyed luxury, warmth, and South Florida identity in a single piece. The backlit onyx required structural engineering to support the translucent stone panel while housing the LED lighting system behind it.
Our Approach
We fabricated the front-facing panel from honey onyx—a translucent natural stone that glows amber when backlit—and mounted it on an aluminum subframe with an integrated LED panel rated for 50,000+ hours of continuous operation. The work surface used Absolute Black granite for durability and contrast. All fabrication was completed in our facility and the desk was delivered in three sections for assembly in the lobby.
The Result
A hotel reception desk that has become a landmark in its own right. The hotel reports that guests frequently photograph the glowing onyx panel and share it on social media, generating organic visibility for the property. The desk has been in continuous use for over two years with zero maintenance beyond routine cleaning.
Project Details
This boutique hotel in Miami's design district commissioned a reception desk that would serve as both a functional workspace and a signature piece of the lobby's identity. The design called for backlit honey onyx—a translucent natural stone that, when illuminated from behind, produces a warm amber glow that evokes the feeling of tropical sunset light trapped in stone. The engineering challenge was significant: the onyx panel needed to be thin enough to transmit light (2cm) while being structurally supported across a 14-foot span. We designed a custom aluminum subframe with an integrated LED panel rated for continuous commercial operation. The work surface on top used Absolute Black granite—its deep, mirror-like surface provides contrast and the durability needed for constant guest interaction. The entire desk was fabricated in three sections at our Pompano Beach facility, transported to the hotel, and assembled in the lobby during a single overnight installation window to avoid disrupting hotel operations. The result is a reception experience that sets the tone for the entire hotel stay—guests arrive to a warm, glowing welcome that immediately communicates luxury, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.
