The reasons are straightforward: granite handles heat without damage, offers genuine one-of-a-kind patterning, and costs less per square foot than many premium quartz lines. For homeowners who cook heavily and want to set a hot pan down without thinking twice, or for anyone drawn to the depth and movement of natural stone, granite delivers in ways engineered products cannot replicate. South Florida distributors maintain one of the deepest granite inventories in the country due to port proximity—Port Everglades and PortMiami receive container shipments directly from quarries in Brazil, India, and Italy, which means more color options and better pricing than most U.S. markets. When buying granite, the most important step is slab selection. Unlike quartz, where every slab of a given color looks essentially the same, granite slabs vary dramatically even within the same quarry lot. Two slabs labeled 'White Ice' can differ in vein density, background warmth, and crystal size. Always select your specific slab in person under natural light—overhead fluorescent lighting in warehouses can mask undertones that will show up in your kitchen.

For darker kitchens, Steel Grey, Black Pearl, and Absolute Black remain consistent sellers and tend to be among the most affordable granites because of their high availability. Mid-tone options like Fantasy Brown, River White, and Typhoon Bordeaux offer veining that mimics the marble look without marble's maintenance concerns—Fantasy Brown in particular has been one of the most popular granites in South Florida for the last five years because it bridges warm and cool tones. When selecting a granite slab, bring a cabinet door or drawer front to the yard and hold it against the stone. Ask the yard to stand the slab upright and wet a section with water—wetting approximates the sealed appearance and shows the true color depth you will live with. Pay attention to the slab's bookend: granite slabs are cut sequentially from the same block, so the adjacent slab (the bookend) can be used for an island or a second run to achieve visual continuity across a large kitchen.
Sealing and maintenance in humid climates
Granite is porous and requires periodic sealing to prevent staining—this is the one maintenance step that separates it from engineered quartz. In South Florida's humidity, we recommend sealing annually for kitchen surfaces and every 18 months for bathrooms. The process takes fifteen minutes and uses a wipe-on impregnating sealer that does not change the stone's appearance. Look for a quality impregnating sealer—brands like Tenax Hydrex, StoneTech BulletProof, or Miracle Sealants 511 are professional-grade and available at local stone supply shops. Avoid cheap topical sealers from big-box stores that sit on the surface and peel; impregnating sealers absorb into the stone's pores and repel liquids from within. Darker, denser granites like Absolute Black and Steel Grey may only need sealing every two to three years because their tight crystal structure leaves fewer pores. Lighter, more open-grained stones like Colonial White and Kashmir White need it more frequently—some homeowners seal these twice a year in high-use kitchens. To test whether your granite needs resealing, place a few drops of water on the surface and wait five minutes. If the water beads up, the seal is intact. If it absorbs and darkens the stone, it is time to reseal. When granite beats the alternatives

Builder-grade granites in popular colors can go as low as $40 per square foot installed, making granite the best value for high-quality natural stone in our market. The trade-off is the sealing requirement and the fact that no two slabs match perfectly, which can be a concern for very large kitchens needing multiple slabs with visual continuity. Granite also has natural fissures—hairline lines that are part of the stone's geological structure, not cracks. These are normal and do not affect structural integrity, but they surprise homeowners who expect a perfectly uniform surface. If uniformity is your priority, quartz is the better match. If character, heat tolerance, and long-term value are what you are after, granite has few equals.

We accompany clients or send detailed photos with measurements overlaid so you can see exactly which section of the slab becomes your island versus your perimeter. Once the slab is reserved, we template your space with digital laser tools, program the cuts, and fabricate in our Pompano Beach shop. Granite requires careful handling during edge profiling because natural fissures can propagate if forced—our operators know where to slow the tooling and how to reinforce any natural inclusions with epoxy before cutting. After fabrication, we dry-fit, inspect, and transport with A-frame racks to prevent flexing during delivery.
