The Challenge

The property is two blocks from the ocean, meaning salt air is a constant concern. The client wanted a modern, clean aesthetic but had been burned by a previous outdoor surface that discolored within two years of installation.

Our Approach

We specified a large-format matte porcelain with through-body color—meaning any surface wear does not reveal a different color beneath—and used a non-porous matte finish that requires no sealing and is unaffected by UV or salt air. The grill surround was designed with proper clearance and the layout allows for full hose-down cleaning.

A durable, low-maintenance outdoor kitchen surface purpose-built for the South Florida coastal environment that retains its appearance with minimal upkeep.

Project Details

This Miami Beach outdoor kitchen project was driven by a single constraint: the previous outdoor countertop surface had failed within two years due to UV discoloration and salt air damage. The homeowner wanted a surface that would not require that conversation again. We specified a large-format matte porcelain—non-porous, UV-stable, unaffected by salt air, and rated for exterior use—in a concrete-look finish that complemented the home's modern exterior. The layout included a built-in grill surround, prep station, and refrigerator housing, all surfaced in the same material for a unified look. Installation coordination included integration with the landscape contractor and pool deck contractor to ensure the countertop elevation aligned with adjacent hardscape. The result is a surface that is cleaned with a garden hose and has zero ongoing maintenance requirements.
