The Challenge
The unit faces west over the Intracoastal, flooding the kitchen with dramatic sunset light every evening. The client wanted a stone that would interact with that light rather than simply reflect it. Standard marble or quartz options felt flat under the intense golden-hour illumination.
Our Approach
Cristallo quartzite was the answer—its translucent quartz crystal veining actually captures and refracts light, creating a glow effect at golden hour that no other natural stone can replicate. We paired the light stone with dark walnut cabinetry for contrast, fabricated a mitered waterfall island for maximum visual mass, and installed LED accent lighting under the upper cabinets to highlight the crystal structure after sunset.
The Result
A kitchen that changes character throughout the day—cool and serene in morning light, warm and luminous at sunset, and dramatically backlit in the evening. The client says guests regularly ask if the countertops are backlit, when in fact it is just the natural crystal structure catching ambient light.
Project Details
This Aventura high-rise condo sits on the Intracoastal Waterway facing west, which means every evening the kitchen is bathed in dramatic golden-hour sunlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows. Most stone surfaces either wash out or create harsh glare under these conditions. Cristallo quartzite does something different—its translucent quartz crystal veining captures, refracts, and redistributes that light, creating a luminous glow effect that makes the stone itself appear to be lit from within. We selected two consecutive slabs with matching crystal patterns and planned the waterfall island so the largest crystal formation sits at the center of the island top, where it catches the most direct light. The mitered edge construction gives the island a monolithic presence, and the dark walnut cabinetry provides the contrast needed to let the stone's light-play take center stage. The matching backsplash slab behind the cooktop continues the material story from island to wall. Condo logistics included coordinating with building management for three separate freight elevator bookings—slab delivery, dry-fit verification, and final installation—each requiring COI updates and advance scheduling.
